This drawing is a part of my “Floating Head” series. Quokkas are a cute little marsupial that can only be found on Rottnest Island off the coast of Western Australia and also in some locations in the South West of Western Australia. Because they are relatively defenseless, small and inquisitive they are very vulnerable to attacks from introduced species such as cats and foxes so there aren’t too many on the mainland of Australia, though they’re just about everywhere you look on Rottnest Island away from predators. Living in Western Australia for most of my life I’ve visited Rottnest Island quite a lot and so have fond memories of summers riding around the small island on push bikes (there are no cars or motorbikes allowed on the island) to snorkel at all the beautiful little beaches and having these funny little animals constantly coming up to say hello. The Dutch originally discovered the island and thought the quokkas were giant rats and named it Rottnest which translates to rats nest which sounds horrible but quokkas are not at all related to rats and are actually very closely related to wallabies and kangaroos.
